Session 2:
Past to Present: The Evolution of Juneteenth Celebrations

Explore how Juneteenth celebrations have changed throughout the years, and the impact they have had on society. This session is organized in three insightful parts. :

Part 1: Understanding the Past

  • Unpack the events of June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, when the last enslaved people learned of their freedom

  • Trace the evolution of Juneteenth from post-emancipation education about voting rights to a broader celebration of African American cultural heritage

Part 2: Juneteenth and the Workplace

  • Understand how Juneteenth principles can guide the enhancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

  • Explore how celebrating cultural diversity and conducting respectful discussions on race and history can make a different in the workplace.

Part 3: Celebrating Juneteenth

  • Discover what took place in the earliest Juneteenth observances in Texas and how Juneteenth is celebrated today across the United States

Diana Montero Headshot

Diana Montero is a seasoned DEI professional with 10+ years of experience in DEI. Diana has a passion for advocacy and brings incredible perspective through her lived experience as an Afro-Cuban/Dominican woman. She holds an MBA in Human Resources Management and working towards a Doctorate in Public Policy and Administration. Diana has worked with the Pentagon, Department of Justice, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority where she has facilitated DEI trainings for frontline employees, metro transit police, and executive leadership teams. She also sits as a board member for Fifty Shades of Purple, an organization with a mission to support families and individuals who have been victimized by bullying or abuse.
