The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, led by the UN Secretary-General and UN Women since 2000, aims to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls around the world, calling for global action to increase awareness, promote advocacy and create opportunities for discussion on challenges and solutions.
Women's rights activists have observed 25 November as a day against gender-based violence since 1981. This date commemorates the murders of three female political activists from the Dominican Republic in 19060 by then president Rafael Trujillo.
The UN General Assembly defines violence against women as “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.”
The World Health Organization estimates that about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.
