Transgender Day of Remembrance

Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day of awareness to honor the lives of transgender people who have died or were killed in anti-transgender acts of violence. The transgender flag is blue, pink and white as seen below.

This remembrance day is essential because trans people are still being killed for living life as their most authentic selves. According to research from UCLA, transgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender people to be victims of violent crime. The number of fatalities in 2020 was record-breaking In 2020, a total of 44 transgender and gender non-conforming people were murdered.

How to Observe Transgender Day of Remembrance at Work

  • Be mindful of language: Ensure your policies are inclusive such as the dress code, parent leave, and a trans-inclusive health plan that your workplace offers. Ensure all policies use trans-inclusive language. It is also important to include pronouns in your email signature and on your Zoom profile.

  • Encourage diversity training: Encourage diversity training that addresses the LGBTQIA+ community and transgender individuals in particular. Such training will broaden the horizons of your heterosexual and cisgender employees, teaching them how to create a welcoming environment for their colleagues.
