Veterans Day is a federal holiday recognized in the United States that honors all military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces.
Originally known “Armistice Day” and celebrated first on November 11, 1919, it later became known as Veterans Day. The memorial began in 1920, on first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and Veterans Day became a national holiday in1938.
