Losar

Losar is the Tibetan New Year, a jubilant occasion steeped in spirituality, tradition, and communal celebration. “Lo-sar” means New Year in Tibetan.

Typically falling in January or February, this festival serves as a vital cultural anchor for Tibetans, and is celebrated by various Himalayan communities as well.

It is a fusion of religious rituals and secular festivities, where monastic prayers and rites blend seamlessly with community feasts, dances, and the exchange of well wishes. Festivities include traditional attire, prayer flags and time spent with family.

The first three days of celebration are particularly important:

  • Lama-Losar (Day 1)

  • Gyalpo-Losar (Day 2)

  • Chockyong-Losar (Day 3)

Losar is more than just a new year observance; it's a homage to the rich tapestry of Tibetan life, encapsulating hopes for a prosperous and harmonious year ahead.
