World Autism Awareness Day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, this day aims to bring awareness of the unique hurdles faced by autistic individuals, resolve misinformation and myths, as well as celebrate the unique talents of those with autism.

It further unites organizations around the world to aid in research, diagnoses, treatment and acceptance for those affected by autism.

World Autism Awareness Day focuses on sharing stories and providing opportunities to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism, fostering worldwide support.

It is important to recognize the bias and stereotypes that people with autism face in the workplace.

Think about how your organization supports your neurodivergent employees and take a look at your hiring process to be more inclusive.

How to Observe World Autism Awareness Day in the Workplace:

  • Announcements Via Email / Slack: Consider incorporating a monthly message about different observances coming up, and offer employees the chance to offer input when creating each observance’s description.

  • An Educational Approach: Engaging employees with educational material is an excellent way to respectfully acknowledge an observance and open the door to a constructive conversation. When learning about a culture, religion or event, you expand your window of tolerance and adopt a more inclusive mindset.
