National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

October 4 is the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls to honour the lives of the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people of the ongoing violence and hatred against the community.

The recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission from 2015 led to National Inquiry into MMIWG in 2019. It provided evidence of the disproportionate systemic violence, abuse, and discrimination.

DID YOU KNOW: Indigenous women are twelve times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other woman in Canada and sixteen times more likely to be murdered or missing than white women in Canada?

How to Observe the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in the Workplace

  • Listen to the Community: The most important voice is the voice of the Indigenous community. Form genuine relationships with Indigenous people and listen to their feedback. They will let you know what is helpful and what is harmful.

  • Get involved: Attend important events, volunteer time, and advocate alongside your indigenous counterparts. Your involvement is precious. If applicable, offer your company’s services to the indigenous community.

Hello everyone,

Today October 4, is the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. This day raises awareness for the women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people that have been murdered or have been missing due to ongoing violence and hatred towards Indigenous communities.

It is a good time for us all to take a moment to educate ourselves on how to be an ally to the Indigenous peoples of Canada. The first step to reconciliation is to listen to Indigenous communities.

Thank you for learning with us,
